HISTORY

This breathtakingly beautiful valley has an exceptional history going back to

the stone age.

In 1971 the fossilized remains of a human being from over 450 000 years ago were

Discovered in a cave ‘La Caune de l’Arago’ which overlooks the valley.

 Arago

Endearingly called The Tautavel Man this discovery classified Tautavel as the

birthplace of humanity.

Numerous flint tools have been found in the cave and would have been used by Tautavel man

for cutting, cleaning skins and making fire.

The flints were exquisitely sculpted with outstanding precision and the small jewel like

stones from the prehistoric past can still be found in the vineyards of Tautavel and Vingrau.

 Flints

The flint, symbol of manual work and craftmanship, fits well with the image of the wine grower

of Tautavel who today still does much of the work in the vineyard by hand.

The flint also reflects the importance of the terroir for the quality of the wines from Tautavel

and Vingrau.
