The vineyards of the cooperative of Tautavel and Vingrau cover an area of 980 hectares divided up

into hundreds of small plots.  

 

In 1996 the quality of the wines from the villages of Tautavel and Vingrau was recognised by the 

creation of a new sub appellation – Cotes du Roussillon Villages TAUTAVEL. 

 

Only vineyards in the villages of Tautavel and  Vingrau can be included planted on slopes of red

chalky clay soils and the yields cannot exceed 45hl/ha – this is rarely the case in Tautavel and

Vingrau.  The wines are produced from at least 2 of Grenache Noir, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan Noir and Lladoner Pelut.

 

The vines which are mainly worked by hand produce small yields producing dark, powerful and

extremely fruity wines with soft tanins and elegant structure.

 

The Terroir of Tautavel

The Tautavel vineyard is made up of a patchwork of tiny vineyards and is mainly concentrated in the

valley of Tautavel.  Bordered on each side by the grey cliffs, the appellation Cotes du Roussillon 

Villages Tautavel is produced on the higher slopes of the valley on limestone soils.

 

The lieu dit Roc Amour provides an unequaled view point over the valley and by its name

also encapsulates the passion and amour that the growers of Tautavel share for their terroir.

 

The Terroir of Vingrau

The village of Vingrau takes its name from the latin vin (20) and Grau (steps).  These 20 steps can still

be seen today on a path leading out of the village towards the Pas de l’Echelle which crosses the

amazing natural stone ampitheatre known as the Cirque. This is one of the most spectacular vineyards in Roussillon.

 

Vingrau is the only other village that is allowed to produce the appellation Cotes du Roussillon

Villages Tautavel. The terroir is characterised by chalky clay soils and its own specific micro climate.
